Abstract

China has long-standing political, strategic, cultural, and economic interests in the Islamic world. At the same time, the relationship between China and Israel has grown tremendously since the 1990s. Israel has become a potential hub for China’s Belt and Road Initiative with increasing Chinese investment flowing into the Jewish state. The growing relationship between China and Israel has become an important variable in Beijing’s traditional relations with countries in the Islamic world. This chapter examines the rationale and strategies of China’s expanding engagements with and growing investment in Israel and discusses the impact on China’s relations with the Islamic world. It concludes that China will, in parallel, continue to develop relations with both Israel and the Islamic world; however, China’s expanding relations with Israel will not be at the expense of its relations with the Islamic world.
