Abstract

The first anaerobic lipolytic bacterium isolated from the rumen was Anaerovibrio lipolytica. In this study strains of anaerobic lipolytic bacteria were isolated from a sheep rumen. All the new isolates were Gram negative curved rods with flagella. The bacteria, which produced propionic acid as a major fermentation product, could ferment only a small range of substrates. The new isolates are thought to belong to the same genus as Anaerovibrio lipolytica.
