Abstract

The literature concerning the regularity of the menstrual function is reviewed. In addition a study was carried out using the menstrual records of 131 members of a Nurses Training School. 1522 menstrual periods are recorded 1414 in the controlled group and 231 in the questionable group. The study illustrates the marked irregularity of the memstrual period. Irregularity in interval number of pads used and length of flow was marked even among the 87 women who considered their periods to be absolutely regular. Variation in occupation did not seem to appreciably affect the general cycle or the amount of dysmenorrhea experienced except that work involving stepping into the large refrigerators seemed to increase the amount of pain experienced. The idea of normal regular periods of 28-day intervals should be abandoned.
