Abstract

It is shown that the irradiance distribution produced throughout the space by a partially polarized beam can be treated in scalar terms. To this aim it is necessary to introduce an equivalent mutual intensity across a beam section. This can be made by exploiting the properties of the beam coherence-polarization matrix.
