Abstract

AbstractThis paper, which formed the basis of the memorable lecture given by Dr Canny at the Society's conference at Wrexham in September 1980, may be considered as a brief summary of his monumental and scholarly work Sceal na hlomana o Thosach Ama go 1884 (The story of hurling from the earliest times to 1884), published in Dublin by An Clochomhar Tta in 1980; 826 pp., price £8.50 + tax. This article is especially welcome as the book itself is entirely in Irish, and many people are thereby unfortunately precluded from enjoying to the full the fruits of Dr Canny's remarkable labours. Organized in thirty chapters, each with detailed notes, the book is based on exhaustive and meticulous research. It is well illustrated, and also contains six appendices, an extensive bibliography to published works and to manuscripts, especially those of the Irish Folklore Commission, a valuable glossary of terms, and detailed indexes to names, places and subjects.
