Abstract

The performance of column-style equipment, including distillation columns or tower reactors, significantly depends on how uniformly distributed the gas flow is at the inlet section of the column. To improve the gas distribution uniformity, the so-called “gas distributor” is an essential part of the column equipment. The design and proper selection of the gas distributor is significantly dependent on the designer's experience level. Lack of the theoretical summary as well as verification limits the design possibilities and improvement potential. In this paper, topology optimization is employed to generate some solid structures inside the gas inlet section, with velocity distribution uniformity and turbulent fluid dynamics equations serving as objective function and constraint, respectively. These generated solid structures can provide some initial guidance for designing the distributor.
