Abstract
At the beginning of the 1990’s Kenya’s government under President Daniel arap Moi experienced numerous protests organized by the Forum for the Restoration of Democracy (FORD) that pressed for democratization. Eventually, the Moi government agreed to legalize opposition parties and to hold competitive elections in 1992. However, these reforms did not lead to a transition to democracy. The ruling Kenya African National Union (KANU) was able to win multiparty elections and gained a majority of parliamentary seats, and Moi started another presidential term.
