Abstract

The dielectric and piezoelectric response of [001] poled (1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 -xPbTiO3 (PMN-xPT) crystals was investigated as a function of composition and phase using Rayleigh analysis. The intrinsic dielectric and piezoelectric response of the monoclinic (M) phase PMN-0.32PT crystal, exhibited higher values (8155, 1963 pm/V) than the rhombohedral (R) phase PMN-0.31PT crystal (3297, 1342 pm/V). However, the extrinsic contribution on the total dielectric and piezoelectric responses of PMN-0.32PT crystal, is larger than PMN-0.31PT crystal. This ultrahigh electric response was determined with the crystal structure, the nature of the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB). Unfortunately, the intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to electric responses was not used by the Rayleigh law for the tetragonal PMN-0.36PT crystal, due to 90° domain wall motion.
