Abstract

The 19F chemical shifts of some para-substituted fluorobenzenes and some 4-substituted-4'-fluoro- trans-stilbenes are discussed within the average excitation energy approximation. Changes in the “paramagnetic” term of the 19F nuclear screening tensor are estimated from Pariser-Parr-Pople MO calculations and found to provide a reasonable description of the chemical shifts. By means of INDO MO calculations the field effects of substituents on the chemical shifts are observed. An average value of the field constant A, for the C-F bond, is found to be −46.0 × 10 −12 e.s.u. for the para-substituted fluorobenzenes.
