Abstract

The usefulness of a laboratory test in clinical medicine depends on thorough knowledge of the characteristics of the test, awareness of its limitations, and timely ordering of the test in the appropriate clinical setting. Limitations inherent to testing, risks of testing, and suggested guidelines for ordering tests are discussed.
