Abstract

The ‘Kinesonde’ multifrequency complex-amplitude spaced-antenna system was collocated with the incoherent scatter system of the CNET at St. Santin de Maurs (France) over the period May–August 1970. Measurements of 3-dimensional drifts by the spaced-antenna, spaced-frequency technique, analyzed by a statistically-rigorous form of correlation analysis, are compared with the ion drift velocity along the magnetic field direction measured by incoherent scatter. These comparisons extend over the height range 92–400 km. The Kinesonde measurements agree with the field-aligned projection of the neutral wind, which above 150 km is deduced from the ion drift by allowing for the effects of plasma diffusion. The vertical drift component observed by the Kinesonde is always significant, and it is doubtful that the conventional 2-dimensional form of the experiment can be considered informative for the F-region.
