Abstract

The United States and the Music Educators National Conference were well represented at the International Society for Music Education meeting in Tokyo, Japan. President of the MENC, Alex H. Zimmerman, presided at a general session. Executive Secretary of the MENC, Vanett Lawler, as ISME Treasurer, had an official role to play. Many professionally excellent papers were read by delegates from the United States. Among the speakers were: Harold Arberg, Specialist in Music Education and Acting Director of the Cultural Affairs Branch of the United States Office of Education, representing the United States Government; Vanett Lawler; Barbara B. Smith, Professor of Music, University of Hawaii, Honolulu; Geneva Nelson, Associate Professor of Music Education, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; Mantle Hood, Professor of Music, Director of the Institute of Ethnomusicology, University of California, Los Angeles; Donald Paul Berger, Music Director, The American School in Tokyo; and Elizabeth May, ethnomusicologist of Los Angeles, California.
