Abstract

I n Paris, France, in July 2002, almost 12,000 dermatologists gathered for the 20th World Congress of Dermatology, a congress that by all measures was an outstanding success. At the same congress, 220 dermatologists at the assembly of delegates of the International League of Dermatological Societies (ILDS) met to decide where the next World Congress of Dermatology would be (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and to elect a new board of management for the league (the International Committee of Dermatology). The board then elected the new office bearers for the next 5 years (Professor Robin Marks, president; Professor Georg Stingl, secretary-general; Professor Ana Kaminsky, treasurer; and Professor Rod Hay, chairman of the International Foundation for Dermatology). What was the background to this World Congress; what is the ILDS and what does it do? I suspect that very few of the more than 45,000 dermatologists who are represented on the League through their national or international societies know.
