Abstract

‘The ILD at War in Gaza’ by Maayan Geva examines Israeli military practitioners’ involvement in Operation Cast Lead, the 2008/9 Israeli offensive in Gaza. Focusing on the practice of the military International Law Department (ILD) relating to specific policies and actions in this operation, it considers the ILD’s engagement with two of International Humanitarian Law’s pillars: the distinction between civilians and combatants, and the measure of proportionality. Building on an analysis of military legal practice in Gaza, this chapter argues that legal and operational logics have in this case become intertwined in a novel manner.
