Abstract

Reading books play an important role in children's cognitive and social development. However, many children do not have access to diverse collections of books because of the limited resources of their community libraries. This chapter addresses this issue by creating a large-scale digital archive of children's books—International Children's Digital Libraries (ICDL). This chapter discusses the initial efforts involved in building the ICDL, focusing on an informal evaluation of innovative digital book readers. Current commercial book readers are likely not sufficient to satisfy children's diverse needs. The standard book readers come from Microsoft and Adobe. Their e-book readers for personal computers are Microsoft Reader and Adobe Acrobat eBook Reader. With these text readers, navigation between two pages is primarily accomplished by using keyboard shortcuts or small next and previous page buttons, which are too small for young children. SearchKids has a graphical direct manipulation collaborative interface for searching, browsing, and viewing the query results of digital libraries.
