Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the intermediary role of workplace friendship in the effect of job satisfaction on employee performance of nurses, working in the hospitals in the city centre of Sanliurfa. The population of this study consists of approximately 2000 nurses, working in one public, one university and one private hospital in the city centre of Sanliurfa. Due to the large amount of the population, the number of sampling is determined as 360 with simple random sampling method. The study was conducted between 01.10.2019 and 31.01.2020 and 575 nurses participated in the study. The reliability of workplace friendship (.883), employee performance (.843) and minesota job satisfaction (.949) scales was found as high. According to the findings, the direct effect of job satisfaction on employee performance was found as 0.220, the indirect effect of workplace friendship was found as 0.250 and their total effect was found as 0.470. According to the standard effect coefficient, it is expected that 1 unit change in the job satisfaction score cause 0.470 unit increase in the employee performance score and 1 unit change in the workplace friendship score causes 0.448 unit increase in employee performance. Consequently, the intermediary role was found as statistically significant according to sobel test. In addition, 36.7% of the employee performance variable of job satisfaction is explained by workplace friendship variable as an intermediary variable. In other words, workplace friendship affect the employee performance of job satisfaction of nurses.
