Abstract

The notion of interactive use of MCS, initially introduced in Simons’ theoretical framework on the levers of control, becomes a central reference in the strategic management literature. Despite the increasing interest for this notion, some concerns have been expressed about its theoretical meaning and operational measurement. Then, this paper (i) provides an overview of the literature on the theoretical meaning and operational measurement of the interactive use of MCS, (ii) explains and illustrates some important points of critique and (iii) proposes some further research developments based on these points of critique.
