Abstract

Future work self salience has been identified as an important predictor of career planning, yet very little is known about how future work self salience can be achieved. We hypothesized that improvement-oriented self-reflection engenders future work self salience that predicts career planning based on the self-regulation and goal attainment model. In addition, we proposed that self-distancing moderates the indirect effect. Using a correlational field study (N = 309) and an experimental study (N = 225), we found that improvement-oriented self-reflection, combined with self-distancing, plays an influential role in increasing career planning through boosted future work self salience. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications of the findings.
