Abstract

The department of Information Technology of the Austrian Research Centre Seibersdorf is active in the field of developing software for systems with high safety, reliability or availability requirements as well as in the process of standardization.The projects which will serve as examples for the interaction between the standardization process and the development process are the electronic interlocking system ELEKTRA (developed in cooperation with Alcatel-Austria) and a scalable, distributed security and emergency system, developed for PHILIPS Industry AG.The standardization effort concerned includes work in EWICS TC7 (safety, reliability and security), IEC SC65A, WG 9 (“Software for Computers in the Application of Industrial Safety Related Systems”) and WG 10 (“Functional Safety of Programmable Electronic Systems”). Practical experience from projects as mentioned above as well as the experience gained from work in related standardization groups contribute to better systems and an adaption/combination of standards and guidelines for practical use in the development respective quality assurance process.
