Abstract

The correct selection and use of materials for aerospace products is one of the fundamental aspects of the design process which can provide the necessary competitive advantage to ensure a company's survival and success. At Dowty a number of steps are being taken towards integration of the selection of materials into engineering design - one of which is the creation of a Materials Information (Database) System. This paper describes the evolution of the Information System from the initial recognition of the need, and a specification for an engineering materials database is proposed. It is demonstrated that a Materials Information System will differ from conventional data processing applications in a number of important respects if it is to fully satisfy the requirements of design.
