Abstract

Abstract The hotel and catering industry, like other service industries, is highly demanding on the skills of its staff and consequently education and training issues assume particular importance. The introduction of the Youth Training Scheme (YTS) was therefore welcomed as an opportunity to strengthen the system of vocational preparation for the industry. Research carried out by the Hotel and Catering Industry Training Board (HCITB) indicated that the successful integration of on‐ and off‐the‐job training would be a crucial element in achieving the objectives of YTS. Work‐based projects represent a valuable approach in achieving this integration and the HCITB's work in this area is outlined.
