Abstract

The integration of refugees and deportees into the Federal Republic of Germany can be understood only by comparing three distinctive process areas: structural integration, social integration and emotional integration. These proceeded at different paces. The cold war made a large difference in spurring the activity of the Federal Government towards relocating refugees and equalizing the burden on the population at large. Despite the beneficial effects of the ‘economic miracle’ the problems of refugees and deportees have continued in all three process areas until the present, leaving a legacy of social conflict and loss of status for the resettled population.
