Abstract

This paper examines the institutional dimension of participatory and decentralised planning in Nigeria. This is an important dimension of planning that has received little — but deserves more — attention from planning scholars and professionals in Nigeria. The ineffectiveness of Nigeria's existing territorial framework, i.e. the local government (LG), as a strategy for implementing participatory and decentralised planning has led to suggestions of various alternative strategies. One of those strategies which is examined briefly in this paper is the design of new and more realistic institutional frameworks by which participation and decentralisation can be effectively implemented and sustained.
