Abstract

The disease burden associated with cardiovascular disease is largely due to the inability of the heart to block the spread of injury and tissue damage caused by ischemia, which ultimately leads to adverse organ remodelling and heart failure. Current medical interventions have improved outcomes through mechanical reperfusion and drugs that reduce the workload on the damaged heart.
