Abstract

The authors introduce two classes of finite impulse response (FIR)-median hybrid (FMH) filters called in-place growing FIR-median hybrid (IPG-FMH), and recursive in-place growing FIR-median hybrid (RIPG-FMH) filters. This extended family of filters exhibits a small bias error in the vicinity of a step edge and yet provides good noise attenuation. The new filters are compared with standard median, recursive median, FIR-median hybrid, and recursive FIR-median hybrid filters. Examples of each filter type are given and the behavior of the filters is examined by means of simulations. It is shown that the IPG-FMH filter can be expressed as a weighted FMH (WFMH) filter. >
