Abstract

Crystals of lead azide, silver azide, cadmium azide, silver acetylyde and nitrogen iodide have been irradiated with electrons, fission products, α -particles, and radiation (Bowden & Singh 1954). All these substances are exploded by an inten electron stream, but this is apparently a thermal effect. Nitrogen iodide exploded by fission products and by α -particles but it is exceptional. None of the other crystals explode, although nucleation and other changes occur in the Some typical results are shown in table 12.
