Abstract
A controlled study has been undertaken to determine the usefulness of initial short-term hospitalisation in the chemotherapy of pulmonary tuberculosis in West African males. Thirty-three patients were treated in hospital for a period of twelve weeks, and fifty-six entirely on an out-patient basis for the same period. Patients were allocated to in-patient and out-patient treatment groups irrespective of clinical condition. Identical daily combined chemotherapy was given to each group. No significant differences in the rates of clinical improvement, of weight gain, of radiological change nor of sputum conversion were demonstrated.
