Abstract

The initial expansion of large gaseous releases at altitudes between 150–250 km is investigated within the framework of spherical snowplow models. Good agreement is obtained with two simple models during the first 5–7 sec after release. It is suggested that a simple dimensionless snowplow model is more valid in the transition regime between linear radial growth and diffusive growth than more sophisticated numerical models.
