Abstract

The relationship between electrolytes, glucose, and urate in the blood and the adrenocortical tissue were studied by inhibition of corticosteroid secretion. Although several methods for surgical adrenalectomy were devised, none of them succeeded. As a basis for comparison of the effects of drugs, the normal histology of the adrenals was studied. Metopirone and o,p-DDD caused severe histological damage to the adrenal, whereas dexamethasone and overdoses of ACTH had no apparent effect. Despite the obvious damage seen in the adrenal tissue, no changes were detected in blood, electrolytes, or hematocrit.
