Abstract

BREEDERS of turkeys are often disappointed in the small number of eggs laid by their hens and in the low hatchability of the eggs. The objectives of this study were to measure the degree of heritability of these two characters and to estimate the progress that breeders might expect to make by selecting for them in a breeding program.REVIEW OF LITERATUREThere has been a limited amount of work to show that egg production is heritable in turkeys. Little or no work has been done, however, to show that hatchability is inherited. Breeders have long assumed that both characters are inherited since they are heritable in chickens.The investigations that have been made to date on egg production in turkeys have been concerned with measuring such factors as maturity, persistency, length of pauses, etc., which are known to affect egg production in chickens.
