Recent views concerning the grammatical status of ‘ING sentences’ (e.g. Listening with me was an Argentine) are critically examined by the author in the light of evidence presented in an earlier study of his. It is claimed that the affinities of such sentences to existential (‘ there be’) sentences in particular must be taken into account in formulating their transformational history.
