Abstract

ABSTRACT Infrared and visual photometric data are presented for elliptical and S0 galaxies in the Pegasus I cluster of galaxies. Multiaperture measurements were made in the UBV and infrared by a 1.3-m telescope, and color indices and magnitudes were calculated in order to obtain a color-magnitude diagram. The well known correlation between galactic luminosity and redness is apparent in the diagram, with but two galaxies deviating significantly from the relation established. A two-color (U-V), (V-K) diagram of the Pegasus galaxies is also presented and compared with those of the Virgo and Coma clusters. Results averaged from the (K, (U-K)) and (V, (U-V)) color diagrams obtained are noted to indicate a distance modulus for the Pegasus cluster relative to the Virgo cluster of 2.32 + or - 0.37 m, consistent with a large deceleration of galaxies in the Local Supercluster.
