Abstract

Since the Revolution of Information Technology (IT) studies are trying to show the benefits of IT. The studies focus on levels of firm, the sector of economy and country and often the result of the studies shows zero or little expressive benefits of IT. One of the difficulties of the researchers is to find the databases with the inputs capital and labor available in categories IT and non-IT, and then make the searches. This research aims to study the investment in the IT of industrial sector of `Paulista Paraiba' Valley in the years from 1996 to 2005 through the database of the Annual Industrial Survey - PIA-Enterprise, of the IBGE. The results point to a low investment in IT in the industrial sector of the region, in relation to non-IT investments, but with high investment in the input labor. It is concluded that the investment in IT labor and, in particular, non-IT labor are critical to economic development in the industrial sector of the region.
