Abstract

Brazil's mobile telephony sector has been liberalised by the country's government. Licenses are due to be awarded in the second half of 1996 so that new entrants can launch operations in 1997. Meanwhile the mobile operations of the national telecoms operator Telebras will be privatised in 1998. Leading US and European telecorns groups such as AT&T, Air‐Touch, BellSouth, GTE, Motorola, Nynex, SBC, STET and Telia are planning to bid for licenses, despite a 49% limit on foreign ownership of a mobile operator.
