Abstract

The life history traits of Aphidius gifuensis on Schizaphis graminum reared on six cultivars of wheat (var. Annong, Jimai, Shannong, Shimai, Yangmai and Liangxing) were investigated in the laboratory. Results show that the developmental stage of A. gifuensis from the Annong treatment was significantly less than that of other wheat cultivars. Although the longevity of A. gifuensis females of the Shimai, Yangmai and Liangxing treatments was significantly longer than that of other treatments, even only the numbers of A. gifuensis female adults were greater in Shimai and Yangmai treatments. With Annong as the host plant, the intrinsic rate of increase (r) of A. gifuensis parasitizing S. graminum was significantly greater than that of other wheat species. In conclusion, among the six selected wheat cultivars, A. gifuensis performed best in the Annong treatments; thus, the wheat cultivar Annong might be the best host plant for mass rearing of A. gifuensis in biological control programs.
