Abstract

In an all-glass corona discharge tube of the wire-coaxial cylinder type, a wire which is still during a 60-cycle discharge in air, ammonia, oxygen, hydrogen or hydrogen-nitrogen mixtures vibrates when these gases are replaced by nitrogen, carbon monoxide or methane. Vibration was prevented by sealing the wire while it was electrically heated and under tension.
