Abstract

Complete unilateral ligation of the ureter causes a functional increase in the contralateral kidney by 32% as measured by the split 131J-hippuranclearance test. These values seem to be lower than those obtained after unilateral nephrectomy. Controls before and after uninephrectomy in 27 patients showed an increase of hippuran clearance by 25% not only in healthy organs but also in preoperatively damaged kidneys. Greatest functional increase was seen after removal of a pyonephrotic kidney
