Abstract

Graphite/epoxy honeycomb sandwich beam specimens have been subjected to a tropical environment while being cyclically loaded to −2500 uE. No growth of impact or artificial damage has been detected after 300 000 cycles at this strain level. Moisture absorption by the graphite/epoxy skins and adhesive has resulted in very slight increases in compliance of the specimens. Separate moisture absorption experiments show that the level of moisture absorption in a tropical environment depends heavily on the amount of incident sunlight, the presence of any surface coating and the prevailing meteorological conditions.
