Abstract

Objective To provide the reference for the stentless aortic valve design by observing the influence of glutaraldehyde(GA)and epichlorohydrin(EC)treatment on the fresh porcine aortic root. Methods The orifice area of aortic roots and the dimensions of cusps for 40 porcine aortic valves (20 fresh and 20 treated valves)were measured to study the dimension variations of fresh valves by treatment. Results (1)One cm above the sino-tube(STJ1)and at the sino-tube(STJO),sinus(SINUS)and aortic base(BASE)levels, the orifice areas of the fresh valves were respectively(2.33±0.41),(2.18±0.45),(4.07±0.54),(2.48±0.36)cm2,and those of the treated valves were respectively(2.30±0.31),(1.98±0.40),(3.92±0.71),(2.47±0.32)cm2,respectively.The orifice areas of both groups conformed to the pattern as follows:SINUS > BASE > STJ1 > STJ0(P < 0.05).All the dimensions at four levels in fresh group were larger than those in treated group, but there was no significant difference (P <0.05).(2)The cusp areas of the fresh group were respectively(3.10±0.44),(3.41±0.46),(2.54±0.32)cm2,following the laws:right coronary cusp(R)> left coronary cusp(L)> non-coronary cusp(N)(P < 0.05),and those of the treated group were(2.26±0.32),(2.49±0.47),(2.04±0.35)cm2 respectively, following the similar patterns, but statistical significance only existed between R and N(P < 0.05).Conclusion The dimensions of porcine aortic roots wercn' t largely changed by GAand EC treatment, but the cusps were changed statistically.
