Abstract
Measurements of electrokinetic and transmembrane potentials and of respiratory activity were used to check the interconnection between the ability of a Pseudomonas fluorescens B-5040 culture to destroy cyanides and the electrosurface cell properties. It was established that these bacteria are capable of utilizing cyanides in dispersions that contain the investigated strain and NaCN, Na 3Cu(CN) 4, NaAg(CN) 2, Na 2Zn(CN) 4, or K 4Fe(CN) 6 solutions. It was shown that the cell-cyanide interaction does not have the characteristics of physical sorption but it is connected with the metabolic transformation of the cyanide metal complexes. As long as cyanide complexes are present, the character of the changes in the respiration rate and in transmembrane and electrokinetic potentials coincide; this allows the application of each of these parameters for testing the bacterial cultures for resistance to cyanides.
