Abstract

Abnormally high wear rates of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene have been associated with sliding against freshly polished titanium. The wear rate can be brought to the level associated with stainless steel and cast Co-Cr-Mo alloy on polyethylene by the growth of a passive film on titanium. This can be accomplished either in air at elevated temperatures or in oxidizing aqueous solutions.
