Abstract

Recent studies have suggested that vasectomy can have deleterious effects on testis structure and function in rats. This study investigated the conditions under which the ductus is ligated or removed and the possible effect on testicular activity. 2 groups of rats were sterilized by various operative techniques. The major difference between the groups was in preoperative sterilization procedures for the test subject and operating equipment. The sterile group conditions included aseptic precautions with 70% ethanol which was not part of the procedure in the group. The operative techniques and testis weight and activity ventral prostrate weight and adrenal weight compared and it was found that the groups testicle weights and activity were markedly less than in the sterile group. It is concluded that non-sterile operative procedures led to infection and deterioration of the testis while the sterile group showed no adverse effects on the testis or accessory organs.
