Abstract
Four samples of commercial active carbon (coal-based) separated in an air stream as fractions with different degrees of activation were used as Cr-Cu-Ag catalyst carriers. One half of each fraction was left unchanged, the other was impregnated with a solution of chromium, copper and silver salts. Adsorption-desorption isotherms of benzene vapour were determined for each carrier and impregnated carbon and the porous structure parameters were calculated. The volume and weight of catalyst deposited from the impregnating solution per 1 g of active carbon was determined. The protective properties of impregnated carbons were evaluated using cyanogen chloride as the test toxic substance. The analysis of the results shows that the catalyst will deposit in the micro-, supermicro- and mesopores rather than in the macropores if the activation degree of the carbon carrier is sufficiently high. The breakthrough time of ClCN for impregnated carbons increases considerably with extent of activation.
