Abstract

The plasma of the ionospheric F-region is characteristically modulated by the structure of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). Using foF2 values for different ionosonde stations it can be shown that the maximum electron density of the F2-layer is controlled by the vertical component of the IMF in the solar-magnetospheric coordinate system. This effect, which can especially be detected during IMF sector boundary crossings, depends markedly on season, solar activity and latitude.
