Abstract
Studies of the shift in certain societies from pedestrian to equestrian mobility have tended to overemphasize the influence of the horse on all aspects of these societies. Examples are taken from Indian tribes of lowland SouthAmerica to indicate thatmore attention should be paid to the nature of the recipient culture and that major changes subsequent to the introduction of the horse can often be attributed to other factors.
