Abstract

This article argues that Pilar Miró's film El perro del hortelano (1996) was influenced by an earlier Soviet television adaptation of Lope de Vega's early modern classic, entitled Sobaka na sene (Yan Frid, 1978). In order to advance this hypothesis, I provide close analysis of sequences from both versions, before going on to offer some tentative explanations as to how and why Miró might have come across an adaptation that was almost unknown in Spain in the 1990s.
