Abstract

The knowledge of the rock properties is one of the most important requirements for studying the problem of rockbursts. The Burst Proneness Index, uniaxial compressive and point load strengths, brittleness, modulus of rigidity and compressional wave velocity were determined for the rocks in the Sudbury basin, Canada. It was observed that the brittleness, compressive and point load strengths, modulus of rigidity and compressional wave velocity have strong influence on the Burst Proneness Index. The use of Burst Proneness Index as a simple and reliable measure to indicate the burst prone locations in the mines has been proposed in this paper.
