Abstract
The Influence of Residual Stresses on Rock Hardness An experimental study with various methods and involving different brittle materials (ordinary or tempered glass, hard rocks), has shown the influence of residual tangential stresses on the apparent hardness of rocks for indentation or wear. This property allows an improving of the efficiency of drilling machines, by choosing tool shapes leading to the most favourable stress concentrations at the bottom of boreholes.
