Summary

Introduction

Crude oil production is as much about produced water as it is about energy production [1]. In the United States of America (USA), produced water comprises approximately 98% of the total volume of exploration and production waste generated by the oil and gas industry [3]. It is the largest volume of waste generated by the oil and gas industry [4]. Toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene isomers and phenols are found in produced water as soluble but toxic compounds. The solubility of these compounds in produced water has made their removal challenging [8]
