Abstract
Publisher Summary This chapter describes the influence of process parameters on the distribution of nitrogen and sulfur in the coal pyrolysis products. The aim of the experimental investigation is to determine the distribution of sulfur and nitrogen in the solid, gaseous, and liquid pyrolysis products, and especially to analyses the major significant chemical compounds and the chemical reactions involved in their formation. The influence of temperature, pressure, and gas atmosphere was investigated in three experimental series in different gas atmospheres at different pressure stages. The chapter describes the distribution of the hetero atoms in the solid and liquid products. At normal pressure, the decomposition and release of sulfur containing compounds started at temperatures above 600°C. This indicated a decomposition of pyrite. In inert gas, the sulfur release was finished at 700°C. An increase of the pressure up 100 bar shifted the beginning of the sulfur release to temperatures of above 800°C, which is normally the decomposition temperature of aromatic compounds. By this effect under high inert gas pressure and low pyrolysis temperature, a significant enrichment of the sulfur occurred in the char.
